Chapter 14

Steve thought he recognized these wolves the moment he caught sight of them. And smell.

The same ones from the road. The same ones who had torn him open, who had left him bleeding to die.

There was only one thing they could be here for, and he sure as hell wasn't about to let them have it.

Steve pulled Denise into his arms. Jackson and two of his other wolves snarled, charging towards the wolves who had suddenly burst onto the scene.

This time, the parents showed a great deal more terror as they screamed and gathered up their children. Steve doubted any of them would be whining or complaining about not getting to see that fight.

He followed the nearest male and female he could spot. They only had one child between them, so at least he wouldn't be putting too many kids at risk here.

"Wait! Please, stop!"

The male didn't slam the door right on Steve's face, but it was close enough that Steve could barely make out any details of the male's face.

"Please, I need to hide her."

The man glanced down at Denise, then back up at Steve. "You've got a place to hide her."

Steve stuck his foot in the door before the man could slam it shut, and that really fucking hurt with bare feet. He snarled through his teeth. "I can't leave her alone."

"We've got a kid in here!"

And this male was clearly no alpha, but two adults watching over her were better than no one at all.

Steve shook his head. "There's a fight going on behind me and I need to help. Please, let me put her inside with you. I'll make it up to you later."

He had no idea how, but that didn't matter. The sounds of the wolves behind him trying to rip each other apart was getting closer and closer as Jackson and his wolves struggled to hold the threat back, and with the taste of blood still in his mouth, Steve wanted to join in on that fight.

The male hesitated for the longest three seconds of Steve's life, and because of that, he could no longer leave the choice up to him.

He pushed his way through the door. The male tried to push back, but the door cracked under the pressure and he was forced to step back or else let it shatter.

"She won't be any trouble," Steve said, moving towards the couch nearest the door to the tiny home.

The female held her child behind her, eyes wide on Steve, as though he was one of the three wolves getting ready to tear shit up around here.

Steve looked away from her, turning his attention to the male, who glared at him.

Steve growled back, letting a little of the wild animal inside him out to play.

And it didn't play as nicely as Steve would have. "I'll come back for her. I find out you threw her outside or something, and I will burn this little hut down around you, understand?"

The man suddenly looked less angry as his eyes popped wide open.
